After exploratory fieldwork conducted in a Swedish Business School, I am about to start a new research project focusing on the acceleration programs of Barcelona. These programs are aimed to support the creation of new businesses through a three-months intense program of mentorship directed to a limited number of start-ups. In Barcelona, they have gained an increasing importance – supported by promotion of the city as the “capital of entrepreneurship” – and gather entrepreneurs, mentors, founders, and customers. In this context, this project is an invitation to look beyond creativity, innovation and talent that are traditionally considered as the seeds to successful start-ups. Indeed, it shifts the focus from these talented entrepreneurs and their ideas to the social and cultural dimension of business creation at stake. By doing so, the aim is to study how the people involved cooperate, negotiate, and do things together during these specific programs, but also build networks and reputation(s) to secure work opportunities.
